Clear as Day
for Boris

It's clear as day. It was sixty-two or sixty-three. Oh, I don't know. Maybe it was the year Kennedy was killed. No matter exactly when, I wasn't a drunk back then. I wasn't this way. Only I was broke and tired. No work to speak of except for the day labor, working warehouses, clearing fields, hauling stone, basically doing what no regular working man would do. I remember shoveling malted milk balls into old waxed cardboard boxes. Old ladies in hairnets would scoop those milk balls out and weigh them into plastic bags. They'd fold over labels on to the bags that said "Dandy Candies" and stick them into a glue press. God that smelled something foul, the sweet chocolate and the hot glue and the odor of those old women. Those ladies went home every evening with glue on their flesh and in their hair, burn marks on their fingertips. My job was to keep the line fed with candies to pack. It seemed wrong to pack candy for children around the country to enjoy, to nag their mothers for, when here we were behind the scenes, paid the minimum, and treated like we were.
